We met in the winter of 2019 while both living in Savannah. And yes, we met the old-fashioned way; online. But thank goodness that modern day technology brought together two people from completely opposite ends of the country, Rex from northern Washington, and Nellie from south Georgia. We hit it off right away and made it official not long after.That “officialness” was immediately put to the test when Rex broke both of his legs the very next day after asking Nellie to be his girlfriend. Nellie briefly suspected he was trying to escape the relationship… but no, he actually did break them and she also doesn’t give up that easily.What followed was an unexpected five and a half month long-distance, newly-budding relationship thanks to COVID: after Rex's legs were barely healed, he was called to set sail on a ship to Guam and Nellie was working as a COVID ICU nurse in California. The world was weird, but our relationship was weirder, in other words, perfect, if you know either of us. Long story short: here we are.Through it all, there has been so much joy, fun, adventure, and laughter no matter what life throws our way. And we can’t wait for what’s next.

Saint Simons has lots of great places to stay on Airbnb and VRBO. We suggest staying on the south end of the island for easy walking or biking to the beach, restaurants, and sights. Since the island is only 13 miles long, anywhere you stay will be about a 10–15 minute drive!

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) • Approx. 1 hour 15 minutes from Saint Simons IslandSavannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) • Approx. 1 hour 30 minutes from Saint Simons IslandBrunswick Golden Isles Airport (BQK) • Approx. 20 minutes from Saint Simons Island Jacksonville and Savannah are larger airports and offer more flight options. Both are an easy, straightforward drive to Saint Simons.Brunswick is a smaller regional airport with more limited flight availability, but it’s the closest option, just across the marsh on the mainland and about a 20 minute drive to the island.

Things to do on Saint Simons Island

We’re so excited to celebrate with you in one of our favorite places and Nellie's hometown. If you’re making a weekend of it, here are some of our favorite things to do on the island.

BeachSt. Simons has beautiful beaches great for walking, or just hanging out.East Beach – The most popular and easiest to access.Gould’s Inlet – More quiet and great for morning sunrises!

Island LandmarksSt. Simons Lighthouse – Climb to the top for the views and explore the nearby shops and restaurants nearby.Fort Frederica National Monument – Old colonial ruins and some really awesome live oak viewing.Avenue of the Oaks – This is best seen right around when the sun is about to set and it really illuminates these old giants!Christ Church – One of the oldest churches in Georgia, surrounded by live oaks, and a must stop if you're visiting Fort Frederica, as they are within a stones throw of one another. Both Fort Frederica and Christ church will require a car if leaving from the south end.

🚲 Outdoor AdventuresBike the Island Trails – Biking around the island is one of our favorite activities. With miles of flat, well-maintained bike paths, it’s an easy and enjoyable way to explore. We recommend renting from Monkey Wrench Bikes, though there are many great bike shops throughout the island.Kayak or Paddleboard – Explore the marshes and creeks with a guided tour.Tree Spirits Hunt – Scattered around the island, these carved faces in old oaks are a fun little scavenger hunt.

The Village &amp; Pier AreaA charming area to wander; There are restaurants, tourist shops, and ice cream.Redfern VillageA more 'local' hub to SSI, there are additional restaurants and shops.

Where to Eat &amp; DrinkSouthern Soul BBQ – A local classic.Fiddlers – Marshfront dining with relaxed atmosphere and seafood.Crabdaddy's – The best Fresh seafood!

Golfing!Saint Simons has many golf courses for all types of golfers.
